Sue Palmer's Synthetic Phonix
Make phonics first, fast and fun!

Phonics is in the news again with The Review of Reading
by Jim Rose recommending systematic, multi-sensory teaching...

Sue Palmer's Synthetic Phonix has been brought out in response to Philip & Tacey's interest in bringing original Phonix in line with the very latest thinking, including the recommendations in The Review of Reading by Jim Rose.

With this in mind, this brand new resource:

  • Is suitable for use in 20 minute fast-paced daily
    phonics sessions
  • Uses a multi-sensory approach with interlocking cubes
  • Is systematic and cumulative - as it breaks phonics
down into two sets that build upon each other - one for
teaching phonics for reading and the other for teaching phonics for writing
  • Integrates with many of your exiting phonics resources
  • Costs just £6.99 for a single set so you can comfortably introduce it into your classroom

How does Sue Palmer's Synthetic Phonix differ from original Phonix?

Sue Palmer's Synthetic Phonix follows the latest advice on
teaching phonics to the letter (excuse the pun), and instead of
putting the two sounds together on one cube (shown below),
separates then onto two cubes. So for example t and r are
separate consonsant sounds.

The original version of Phonix features:
Initial consonant 'blends' which include two phonemes on one cube:

Original Phonix
Final consonant 'blends', two phonemes on one cube:
Original phonix
Sue Palmer's Synthetic Phonix features:
Single phonemes on each cube:

Feedback on original Phonix......."From the moment I first
set eyes on the Phonix cubes, nearly a decade ago, I've thought them a superb resource. With the new interest in synthetic phonics, Philip & Tacey have let me revamp Phonix to ensure that each phoeme is on a separate cube. You can physically grasp the letters that stand for each phoneme, and stick them together to make a word. Or you can hold a word in your hand, and pull it apart to its constituent phonemes."
- Sue Palmer

Review of Reading quote......
"The teaching of phonics work should be multi-sensory, so
that children's learning is reinforced in different ways." -
The Review of Reading by Jim Rose

How does Sue Palmer's Synthetic Phonix help my pupils?

1. Teach it first
No other phonics resource is more suited to developing the key phonics skills before embarking on more formal reading and writing instruction. Use it before you start this and your pupils will be on the right route to becoming literate.

2. Make it fast
There are games and
activities you can implement immediately that last up to the recommended fast-paced 20 minutes of phonics a day.

3. Make it fun
Colourful, exciting, a talking point! Children segment words into phonemes and then blend them back into words without feeling that they're under formal instruction. Stimulated and focused, your pupils remain relaxed and look forward to the next session.

4. Sue Palmer makes things simple for you
Sue's teacher's notes are a welcome find. She treats the subject of phonics with a refreshingly light touch, simplifies the issues and outlines a practical approach that will really work, right away, in a classroom of children of varying abilities at KS1.

5. Sue Palmer adds a little magic for your pupils
Sue's child-centred approach introduces a little more magic to learning about the composition of words. Her "Magic Spells" activity, for example, will have your pupils hunting down the rule behind the spelling pattern. They
won't know they are learning - but they are!
